Search for GPS tracking software and you will find two very different offers. On one side, Traccar: open source, free to download, used by thousands of fleets worldwide. On the other, commercial platforms charging ₹1,500 to ₹4,000 per vehicle per year. Fleet owners often ask us which is "better". The honest answer is that they are different products for different buyers, and SaralTrack itself is built on Traccar, so we know both sides well.
What Traccar is
Traccar is an open-source GPS tracking server written in Java, with a web app and mobile apps. Its standout strength is device support: it understands more than 200 protocols, so almost any tracker sold in India will talk to it. It stores positions, shows vehicles on a map, draws routes, raises basic alerts (geofence, overspeed, ignition) and produces standard reports (trips, stops, summary, events).
You download it, install it on a server, open the ports for your devices, and it works. There is no licence fee.
What "free" actually costs
Running Traccar for a real fleet has costs that do not show up on the download page.
| Item | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Server (VPS, 2 to 4 GB RAM) | ₹800 to ₹2,500 per month | Positions pile up; a 100-vehicle fleet produces 5 to 10 million rows a year |
| Domain and SSL | ₹1,000 per year | Let's Encrypt is free but needs renewal automation |
| Database maintenance | Your time | Backups, cleaning old positions, upgrades |
| Map tiles | Free to ₹5,000 per month | Free OpenStreetMap tiles have usage limits; Google Maps charges per load |
| SMS and email alerts | Per message | You integrate a gateway yourself |
| Upgrades | A few hours each | Traccar releases often; upgrades occasionally change the database |
| Someone who understands it | Salary or retainer | The real cost. When devices go offline at 11 pm, who looks? |
For a 10-vehicle owner-operator who is comfortable with servers, the total can be under ₹500 per vehicle per year. For a 100-vehicle transporter with no IT person, the hidden cost is usually one employee's part-time attention, and that is more expensive than any subscription.
Where stock Traccar is thin
Traccar is a tracking engine, not a fleet management product. Things Indian fleets ask for that stock Traccar does not do, or does only partly:
- Fuel management without sensors. No refill log, no fill-to-fill mileage, no cost per km.
- Parking and towing alerts beyond a basic motion event.
- Company, branch and client structure. Groups exist, but not a hierarchy with per-client logins and reports.
- Indian reports. The daily travel summary that transporters and clients expect (one row per vehicle per day with running, idle and stopped hours) has to be built.
- Billing. No subscription, token or expiry handling for resellers.
- White labelling. The name and logo can be changed, but per-reseller branding, domains and sender identities are not there.
- Document and compliance tracking for AIS-140, fitness, insurance and permit dates.
- Support in Hindi, on WhatsApp, at 7 am when a truck's device shows offline.
None of this is a criticism. Traccar's maintainers keep the core focused on tracking, and a strong ecosystem of forks and add-ons builds the rest.
What commercial platforms add
A paid platform, whether an international product or an Indian one, sells you the finished layer:
- Setup and device configuration done for you, often with the device supply and fitting.
- Reports that match how your clients and the RTO think.
- Alerts delivered by app, SMS and email with the gateway already paid for.
- Upgrades, backups and uptime handled.
- Support with a phone number.
- For resellers: billing, branding and sub-dealer structure.
The price for this in India is typically ₹1,200 to ₹3,000 per vehicle per year for software only, more when the device and SIM are bundled.
A fair comparison
| Self-hosted Traccar | Commercial platform | |
|---|---|---|
| Software cost | Free | ₹1,200 to ₹3,000 per vehicle per year |
| Server and upkeep | You pay and you do it | Included |
| Device compatibility | Excellent, 200+ protocols | Varies; many platforms are also Traccar-based and inherit the same list |
| Setup time | A day for a technical person | Same day, done by the vendor |
| Fuel, parking, compliance, billing | Build or bolt on | Usually included |
| Reports for Indian clients | Basic; customise yourself | Ready |
| Data ownership | Fully yours | Check the contract; export should be available |
| Risk | You are the support desk | Vendor lock-in if they do not allow export |
Who should run Traccar themselves
- Owner-operators with 5 to 20 vehicles and someone in the family who enjoys servers.
- Companies with an existing IT team and a reason to keep data entirely in-house.
- Developers building their own product on top of it.
Who should buy a platform
- Transporters, schools, contractors and rental companies whose business is vehicles, not software.
- Anyone who needs the fuel log, parking alerts, compliance records and client reports from day one.
- Resellers and GPS dealers who want to sell tracking under their own brand without building the billing and branding layer.
What SaralTrack is
SaralTrack is a commercial platform built on the Traccar engine, so you keep the device compatibility and get the fleet layer on top: fuel log without sensors, parking mode and towing alerts, company and branch structure, daily travel summary and Indian reports, AIS-140 and document expiry records, and reseller billing with white labelling. If you already run Traccar, your devices move over without reconfiguring their protocol, only the server address changes. If you later want to leave, your positions export as standard files.
FAQ
Is Traccar really free?
The software is free under the Apache licence. The server, the time to maintain it and any add-ons are not. Budget ₹300 to ₹600 per vehicle per year in infrastructure for a small fleet, plus someone's time.
Is Traccar good enough for a transport company?
As a tracking engine, yes. As a complete fleet product for clients and the RTO, most companies add fuel management, Indian reports and billing on top, either by building or by buying a platform based on it.
Can I move from Traccar to a commercial platform without changing devices?
Usually yes. Most devices are reconfigured with an SMS command that changes the server address. If the platform is Traccar-based, every protocol you used keeps working.
Which is better for a GPS reseller?
A platform with billing, token or subscription management and white labelling. Running Traccar for 20 dealer accounts means you become the software company, which is a different business from selling and fitting devices.
Does SaralTrack lock me in?
No. Reports and positions export to Excel, PDF and CSV, and devices can be pointed back to any server with one command.
